The question is whether a shovel hook to the jaw would be an underrated punch. The word “underrated” here created many curiosities. There is something fishy about this word. because the word is related to entertainment. Like we criticize a low-grade film as an underrated one. However, today’s topic is to determine the status of a shovel hook to the jaw.

About a shovel hook to the jaw is an underrated punch in boxing:

Any use of natural lethal weapons in boxing. For example, rabbit punch is always under close observation by three major rival organizations. The World Boxing Association (WBA), the World Boxing Council (WBC), and the International Boxing Federation(IBF).

Before boxing became a refined martial art it was invented as an extreme weapon. Bare-fingered fist punches and other all possible ways to finish off the enemies on the battlefields. Boxing developed from bare-knuckle fighting. The evolution of the boxing sport took years to be refined. Still, it needs a lot more changes for safety measures. The Marquess of Queensberry’s rules introduced boxing timed rounds and mandatory padded gloves in 1866 to reduce injuries of the boxers.

A shovel hook, which is also termed a “Mexican uppercut”. It is a forty-five-degree angle punch toward the target. The targets are usually the body’s bottom rib or liver or the head side of the chin. A shovel hook is the most devastating punch insofar as it could make a sudden knockout

The shovel hook to the jaw is regarded as the most effective weapon to knock out the opponent in the boxing ring. The KO punch is generated by the left upward angled hook to the jaw. So the authenticity of the technique that brings a  fighter an easy win in a short time must be questioned. Cooney Gerry Cooney masters the art of the shovel hook to the jaw that often results in knocking out the opponent’s boxer. Other popular boxers use the left hook. Of Frazier knocked out Muhammad Ali in 1971 at Madison Square Garden, NY.

There are other techniques to throw destructive punches at the opponent, but the uppercut technique is even more effective to finish the game soon. That is the reason why it is being talked about. Hook punching is a commonplace method allowed so far by the authorities but it lacks a way of the majesty of a famous boxer. Famous boxers usually do not resort to the Mexican Uppercut in the first place. Besides, the hook punch is very versatile, used more or less by every boxer. In this way, almost all boxers have more chances to make contact with the opponent to seriously hit him than other ways of strikes by the hands.

It is highly assumed that the straight punch contributes more to the entertainment of the boxing sport as long as it can display the two people’s competitive fight. The longer they stay in the ring the more the audience enjoys the match. A sudden knockout means the end of the show. It could also make many boxing fans feel unsatisfied.

Experts appreciate that a fast-moving tight fist punch is better than a shovel hook. A jab is even more spectacular by extending the left hand and throwing a sharp punch with a right hand. The jab is the beauty of the boxing sport. It often works offensively and defensively. Jabs are the convenient ways to hit the head most of the time in the ring. Jab is the most important weapon above Cross Hook Uppercut Swing etc. But only highly accomplished fighters like Tyson, and Ali can win a match using jabs instead of applying an underrated shovel hook method. However, if you can not throw a proper jab you must carry on the fight with what you have. In the fight, you have to win because “man is not born to be defeated”.

Final words:

With the above discussion, we can conclude that a “shovel hook to the jaw” is not a decent technique compared to the other technique and thus it is an underrated punch in boxing.
