Martial Arts: Various sports, which originated chiefly in East Asia like Japan, South Korea, and China as forms of self-defence or attack, such as judo, karate, and taekwondo, MuayThai. You name it.

Most of the combat sports alongside other martial arts were used in the ancient battlefields, even in World War II. Those martial arts were invented as a weapon in a face off fight with the enemies. With the passage of time the need for those martial arts have come to an end. Martial Arts started to be practised as a traditional and cultural fighting or combative sport.  The need for rules for the combative sports were required to give the fight a sportive shape. Thus many martial arts can also be considered combat sports, because they come within a purview of rules that ensures safety of the fighters.

The martial arts that have no rules are no sports.  Krav Maga is a non-sport form of martial arts, which means it doesn’t care for rules and opponents’ well-being. This is the world’s most effective and dangerous form of martial art.

It is also the deadliest art not a sport at all.

MMA a Combat sport:

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques from popular martial arts all over the world. It is a hybrid combat sport incorporating fighting techniques and skills from Boxing, Wrestling, Judo, Brazilian jiu jitsu, karate, Muay Thai (Thai boxing), and other disciplines. The rules allow  striking and grappling the opponent, using techniques taken from these martial arts while standing and on the ground. Some of the most popular combat sports are boxing, karate, Kickboxing, and mixed martial arts (MMA).

MMA is defined as a sport, because the  rules and regulations make it for a fair competition, which is watched out by a referee and decided by three competent judges sitting next to the octagon.

Conclusion:

The most techniques MMA takes from the martial arts were used in the battlefield, in the past, for defensive and offensive purposes. Those military martial arts were ruthless. The era of close contact fighting was over. Therefore, after refinement most martial arts turn into a fighting or combat sport. The fighters enjoy fighting for their fans, friends and family. MMA is no longer a military martial art that is designed to kill someone in a war, rather it is a fighting sport intended to entertain people.
