Is 5’9 too short to be a light heavyweight MMA fighter?

Light heavyweight is a weight class which generally refers to MMA competitors who weigh from 186 to 205 lb (84 to 93 kg). The weight class sits between the lighter middleweight division and the heavyweight division. Today we shall discuss the standard height of a light heavyweight  .

MMA Fighters Heights

MMA fighters’ height advantage is real in combat sports. Height may not be the most apparent indicator of strength, but it has a lot of influence on how MMA fighters engage with each other. Height is also closely linked to the reach factor. Generally, the taller fighter can reach the target and plant blows perfectly on the opponent. Anyway, height  does matter in MMA and UFC. Height and reach advantages are two of the most desirable physical attributes in the cage fight. It is quite understandable that height advantage is real in combat sports. The standard height of Light Heavyweight is 6’2″. The weight of this group is 185 lbs (83.9 kg) to 205 lbs (93.0 kg), depending on height. The above height is also the  average height of MMA fighters in this category. The current UFC light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz, who is 6’2″ tall. He is just as tall as the average fighter in the class. Therefore, 5′-9″ is considered far too short for a light heavyweight MMA fighter.

Height and Weight matter in MMA

Despite the fact that we are talking about Light Heavyweight, the Heavyweight issue is brought here for a better understanding. The Light Heavyweight is  the extreme group, the heaviest class of Men’s MMA fighters. 

The average height of heavyweight fighters in the UFC is 6’3″. The current UFC Heavyweight Champion is Stipe Miocic, whose height is 6’4″. He is slightly taller than the average fighter in this category. People say this is the most entertaining MMA weight class. However, the heavyweight category was the former  laughingstock of the UFC. It has rebounded to be the most exciting division in recent months. As a matter of fact, this heavyweight class could have been  hardly successful to entertain the audience. Maybe because they are too heavy. 

On the other hand, the average height of Light Heavy fighters  is 6’2″. And they weigh from 84 kg to  93 kg which is much less than a Heavyweight fighter who weighs up to 120 kg. In MMA classes, weights decide whether an MMA fighter would be eligible for a title bout. 

However, Light Heavyweight is ideal for MMA fights and the standard height depends on the fighter’s accomplishments. But once again, 5’9″ is too short for a light heavyweight MMA fighter. In fact, 5′-9″ height belongs to the Featherweight division. The weight ranges from 135 lbs (61 kg) to 145 lbs (66 kg). Until today, the current UFC Featherweight Champion is Alexander Volkanovski who is 5′-5″+ though.

MMA Classes

MMA classes depend on the weight divisions. The classes below:

1.Flyweight: 125lbs -126lbs= 

The fighters’ average height in the UFC flyweight class is 5’5″.

2.Bantamweight: 135-136 lbs= 

The average height of UFC fighters in this division is 5’7″.

3.Featherweight: 145-146 lbs= 5′-8″+ is the average height of this division. 

4.Lightweight: 155 lbs-156 lbs= 

The average height of UFC fighters in this weight class is 5’10”. The longest-reigning  UFC Lightweight Champion is Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is 5’9″. He proved height always does not matter.

5.Welterweight: 170-171 lbs= 

The welterweight division has an average height of 5’10”. 

6.Middleweight: 185-186 lbs=

The average height of UFC Middleweight class is 6′-1″. 

The current UFC champion is Alex ‘Poatan’ Pereira. He defeated Israel Adesanya at UFC 281. However, both fighters are 6′-4″ tall. 

7.Light Heavyweight:

205-206 lbs= The average height of fighters in this class is 6’2″. In different opinions 6′-5″.

8.Heavyweight: 265 lbs-266 lbs=The average height of heavyweight fighters in UFC is 6′-3″. The current UFC Heavyweight Champion is Stipe Miocic, who is slightly taller than the average fighter in the category with the height of 6′-4″. 

Despite the height advantage, Weight is the ultimate criterion for separating fighters and putting them into groups to ensure fair play. 

However, the average height of a Light Heavyweight Fighter is 6′-2″. The current UFC light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz, who is 6′-2″ as well.

Women UFC Weight Classes

The women’s UFC division is split into only 4 classes: 

1.Strawweight: The Strawweight Division in MMA generally refers to competitors weighing between 106 and 115 lb (48 to 52 kg). 

2.Flyweight: Women’s Flyweight 115-125 lbs (52 kg to 57 kg).

3.Bantamweight: Women’s Bantamweight is a weight class in combat sports. They weigh 126-135 lbs (57kg-61 kg).

4.Featherweight: Women’s Featherweight division weighs between 135-145 lbs (61 kg-66 kg) to compete.

Height and weight play an important role for the human body to determine if he or she has healthy weight,

underweight, overweight or obese. In MMA fights, there are altogether twelve categories including women MMA fighters. These twelve classes of MMA Fighters weights differ from each class and they also have different heights.
