Is MMA dangerous?

Spread the love

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a dangerous full-contact combat sport based on striking, grappling, and ground fighting, incorporating techniques from various deadly combat sports from around the world. Today we shall discuss how dangerous MMA is now.

MMA Dangerous Sport

MMA is about as dangerous as any other full-contact combat sport. Most athletic sports are prone to injuries. Injuries sustained by a regular athlete like a footballer or cricketer are not as serious as those an MMA or a Boxer suffers. MMA fighters are prone to a wide variety of injuries ranging from mild sprains to brain injuries such as concussions. The injury of an MMA fighter is a frequent phenomenon. It cannot be compared to other regular sports where players, sometimes, receive minor injuries where a major injury is a rare occurrence. In MMA, a fighter suffers from some sort of injury in every fight. Sometimes severe and sometimes minor.

MMA fighters used to pain

There are hardly any fights where MMA fighters receive no pain. The nature of pain includes hard-striking contests that leave their hands, feet, and elbows sore and swollen. Grappling-based bouts have their kinds of soreness, usually in the forearms, shoulders, back, and hips. While hard shots to the head might put a fighter in a haze for a few days. They might suffer from headaches and neck pain, because of receiving blows in the face and the head.

The overall injury incidence in MMA appears slightly higher than for boxers. But MMA fighters experience more minor contusions or bruising injuries than boxing. Boxers are more likely to experience serious injuries such as concussion, head trauma that results in loss of consciousness, or eye injury such as retinal detachment which may impair vision forever, if untreated.

Deadly Martial Arts

Some of the deadly martial arts are included in MMA.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai (Thai Boxing), Kung Fu, Taekwondo, Karate, and Sambo.

The following martial arts are designed not for athletic reasons. They are the deadliest martial arts in the world to avenge and assassinate: Krav Maga, Line, Rough and Tumble, Ninjutsu, Vale Tudo, Bacom, Eskrima, and Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP).

MMA Tragic Death

As of April 2019, there have been seven recorded tragic deaths resulting from sanctioned Mixed Martial Arts contests. Nine MMA fighters reportedly have died from unsanctioned bouts. But nobody died, however, in the largest MMA promotion Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). That doesn’t necessarily mean there haven’t been many severe injuries incurred during UFC fights.

A 2006 study suggests that the risk of injury generally in MMA is comparable to that in professional boxing. An MMA fighter is less prone to injury than a boxer. A UFC fighter does not usually go to the hospital for a minor injury. His life is filled with injuries. That is a big part of the job. It takes a special kind of person to get beat up and to hit back for a living and keep coming back for more. Even a beaten-up professional MMA fighter gets paid because he entertains the audience too. With injuries going to the hospital for treatment, doctors usually refuse to treat them as they think it is a dangerous fight that could have killed the injured fighter.

MMA Death Statistics

MMA is becoming a more popular combat sport even than boxing. To understand the MMA position, in terms of tragic death occurring while fighting or aftermath we can compare it with boxing. The number of deaths in boxing completely dwarfs the number of deaths in MMA fighting. Considering the number of deaths in the cage, there is about one death recorded per year related to MMA. Compared to that, there are about 11 deaths that occur in boxing each year.

Conclusion

Yes, MMA is a dangerous combat sport. Of course, there are more dangerous martial arts than MMA that still exist. Most MMA fighters are undaunted and enjoy fighting with runny blood. Men are born with different views of life. Some people work for the welfare of mankind, risking their lives. Likewise, MMA fighters prefer dangerous sports out of indomitable passion.
